Ultra rare and collectible, completely stock 1977 XLCR 1000 Cafe Racer. One just sold for $24,000.00 a few months ago at a Mecum Auction! The Harley-Davidson XLCR Cafe Racer was not only the baddest and blackest of all factory cafe’ racers, but also Willie G.’s first masterpiece. There were two huge global custom motorcycle trends in the 1970’s; choppers and cafe’ racers. Motorcycle designers grappled with satisfying these marketplace urges. For the Italians and British, the cafe’-racer style was a fairly easy target; just add clip-on handlebars and perhaps a fairing, and voila, its a street racer. For Harley-Davidson, that wasn’t such and easy transformation. American shapes had evolved from dirt racing, not the grand-prix circuit, so the question became how to make a Harley-Davidson cafe racer without looking like a foreign machine. Willie G. Davidson, grandson of the company founder, managed to combine the flat-track-style tank and seat with a small fairing and low bars to create the XL Cafe Racer, the fastest model in the Harley Davidson lineup in 1977. It was capable of 115 mph and featured Harley-Davidson’s first triple Kelsey-Hayes disc brake setup. The styling was far more brutal than any Italian or British sports bike with a small half-fairing, squared-lozenge tank, dirt-track tail section, two-into-one-into two matte black exhaust, cast Morris mags and a triple black finish.
