You are looking at a very nice 1977 Yamaha RD400D Resto-mod. This was restored about six to seven years ago and is very well preserved, but is not perfect and showing some aging. That said, it is about as nice an RD as you are likely to find. It placed 3rd as best Yamaha at the Two Stroke Extravaganza a few years ago. Turns heads anywhere it goes. There have been about 4500 miles since engine rebuild and about 2000 miles since top end work and stage two porting. Interested parties should have prior two stroke knowledge. This is not a beginners bike and the new owner should have the ability to service points, jet carbs and do general maintenance. It is not a new bike, but a high performing vintage bike that will need parts replaced. Half the enjoyment of owning this type of motorcycle is working on it to make it yours. This is a fun bike to ride that handles beautifully. I’m guessing a good 10 thousand dollars or more has been spent by me and the last owner, not including the many, many hours spent working on it. These are not cheap to build! 

The Good: – Motor completely rebuilt by one of the best in the business – Gary at Spec ll – Has balanced & welded crank, stage two porting (broadens powerband) and head cc’d. – Spec ll Classic chambers / TDR Reeds / RZ intakes & cross-over tube / Y-boot with K&N filter – High performance coils and Ballistic Lithium Battery. – NGK BR8EIX Iridium Spark Plugs (Run 9’s for extended high speed or freeway riding) – Refinished front forks modified by Race Tech with Gold Valve Emulators and High-Performance Springs. Race Tech set-up sheet will be supplied. Cost was over $500.00. This change really refines the riding experience! – Works Performance Shocks (great two stage shocks that are no longer available – high dollar) – 520 Chain conversion with aluminum rear sprocket (geared slightly lower). – Frame and many parts powder coated or painted.- Roller bearings in headstock & brass bushings in swingarm. – Many new bolts and fasteners. – Tank and side panels professionally repainted with new graphics. – Recent new fuel valve. – Autolube oil pump working and Motul oil used. – Transmission has new Motul Transoil Expert. – Custom cafe racer seat and aluminum with carbon fiber wrap handlebars. – Spec ll rear sets – Drilled brake disks by Spec ll, Magura front master cylinder, rebuilt calipers and braided lines. – Many, many other new and rebuilt parts and components. – Digital Service Manual and reproduction parts manual included.
The Bad: – Non matching frame and engine numbers, but close, probably each from same year. Title listing has same numbers as bike for both frame and engine. – Fork lock and helmet lock do not work. – Right exhaust has lower dent and is starting to crack at mount.  – Left exhaust chrome has differences in coloration and some small marks. – Head gasket is aftermarket and does weep a little. – Chrome front fender has very small nipple dent and some scratches. – Front turn signals have some minor corrosion.- Turn signals work great, but do not self cancel – Rear tire has spider cracking in sidewall but is less than four years old and has plenty of tread. These wheels do require tubes, even though some run them tubeless. – Carbs are currently jetted with rich main jets (250) for safety and will not always run clean on full throttle. Included are smaller main jets, but I thought it best to let the buyer figure out what best works in their environment and elevation. Left carb drain screw frozen.
I’m sure there is plenty more I could say, but this gives you a pretty good insight to this RD. The mileage in the photo might change.
