Before you buy a single part
Model-specific things the XS650 will teach you the hard way otherwise:
- The BS38/BS34 CV carbs are fussy with pods — jet them properly or expect a high-RPM stumble the whole forum warns about.
- PMA charging kits (e.g. XSCharge) are popular for battery-minimal / kick-only builds and hold their value well.
- Hardtail kits are common but fitment varies between brands — check chain-adjuster clearance before buying (a documented TC Bros issue).
Parts, in the order that makes sense
Seat & subframe
A cafe seat or tail cowl defines the whole look — but a hooped subframe is real fabrication, and weld quality shows. Budget for the upholstery, not just the pan.
Bars & controls
Clip-ons or clubman bars plus bar-end mirrors are the cheapest way to nail the stance. Rearsets cost more but transform the riding position.
Exhaust & intake
A 2-into-1 or reverse-cone changes the sound and silhouette — but any exhaust or pod-filter change means re-jetting the carbs, or the bike runs badly and loses value.
Electrical
On an old bike this is where reliability lives. A fresh loom, an electronic-ignition swap and a modern reg/rec are the highest-return jobs you can do — and the ones buyers trust.
Suspension & brakes
Progressive fork springs and a quality set of rear shocks (Hagon/YSS) are cheap wins. A front-disc conversion or braided lines are the safety upgrades buyers actually pay for.
Wheels & tyres
Fresh rubber sells a bike; re-laced wheels look premium. Old, cracked tyres end a sale faster than almost anything else.
What it adds up to
A tidy, reliable XS650 cafe racer done at home lands in the low-to-mid four figures on top of the donor; a shop build with real engine and electrical work runs well past that. What you get back if you sell is usually less than you put in — the calculator shows the honest split for your exact spec.
