Honda CB750 (SOHC): Cafe Racer Donor Guide
The best-supported vintage Japanese four for aftermarket cafe parts, and mechanically a known quantity — a forgiving rebuild. It's heavy (~480 lb) and wide, and the sensible move is to build a later K or F, not a collectible early K0.
Engine: 736cc air-cooled SOHC transverse inline-four, ~67 hp @ ~8,000 rpm
Years: 1969–1978 (SOHC; K0–K8 plus sportier F variants)
Weight: ~481 lb / 218 kg dry
Final drive: Chain
Value: Rough projects roughly $2,000–$3,500; good later K3–K7 riders roughly $4,500–$9,000; early K0 'sandcast' examples are collector money ($15k+) and too valuable to cut. Directional only — not an appraisal.
Common problems
- Cam chain and tensioner wear is the known weak spot — the tensioner blade/slipper fails before the chain does, and it's a top rebuild item.
- Starter-clutch retaining bolts can back out even after correct torque + threadlocker, causing intermittent starter disengagement.
- The stock charging-system rotor/windings are a frequent failure point on higher-mileage bikes.
What to check before you buy
- Inspect cam lobes and journals for pitting or discolouration (oil-starvation from a failed tensioner).
- Check primary chain slack and listen for clutch-basket rattle at idle.
- Confirm the starter engages cleanly on repeated cold starts.
- Verify charging output at idle and at speed — has the rotor/stator been replaced?
- On K0/K1, confirm matching frame/engine numbers and whether the case is sandcast or diecast (huge value swing).
