Triumph Bonneville (Hinckley, air-cooled): Cafe Racer Donor Guide
The easiest modern donor on aftermarket depth alone — British Customs, Carpy's, Motone and others sell bolt-on subframes, seats and electrics for this exact chassis, and it's the newest and easiest to find with full history. Pricier to buy than a KZ650 or R65; a pre-2008 carb bike is the 'purist' pick but carries the stator/carb items.
Engine: Air-cooled DOHC parallel-twin, 790cc (2001–~2006) then 865cc, ~61–67 hp @ 7,400 rpm; twin carbs to 2007, fuel injection from 2008
Years: 2001–2016 (Bonneville, T100, Thruxton, Scrambler and more)
Weight: Mid-weight modern classic
Final drive: Chain
Value: Higher-mile examples roughly $3,000–$4,500; clean well-sorted bikes roughly $5,000–$7,500; low-mile Thruxton/SE editions $9,000+. Asking-price based — directional, not an appraisal.
Common problems
- The factory shunt-type reg/rec runs the stator at full output and cooks it over time — a MOSFET reg/rec (e.g. Rick's) is the well-known fix.
- Pre-2008 carburetted bikes suffer clogged jets, float-valve trouble and perished O-rings, causing rough idle and backfire.
- A cold-start top-end rattle that clears once warm is the cam-chain tensioner (a known wear item); a rattle that persists warm means replace it and check the valves.
What to check before you buy
- Test the charging system and ask whether the reg/rec has been upgraded to a MOSFET unit.
- On pre-2008 carb bikes, confirm a smooth idle, no deceleration backfire, and no fuel pooling in the airbox.
- Cold-start it and listen for a rattle that clears within a minute (tensioner).
- Ask for valve-clearance service history (roughly every 12,000 miles).
- Shift through all gears checking for false neutrals.
