Suzuki GS550: Cafe Racer Donor Guide

Light for an inline-four, with a well-earned 'strong motor' reputation when oil changes were kept up. The cam-tensioner failure mode is real on an unknown-history bike but well-solved in the community. A cheap way into a four-cylinder cafe — just don't expect resale to reward the build.

Engine: 549cc air-cooled DOHC inline-four, ~50 hp @ 9,000 rpm, 6-speed

Years: 1977 onward (E, L, ES/M variants ran into the mid-1980s)

Weight: ~436 lb / 198 kg dry

Final drive: Chain

Value: Cheap across the board: parts/non-runners around $500–$1,000; a good running example roughly $1,600–$2,200; even excellent bikes rarely command $4,000+. Directional only — not an appraisal.
