Suzuki Savage / LS650 (S40): Cafe Racer Donor Guide

The most cafe-endorsed of the budget donors — a commercial conversion kit exists (Ryca CS-1) and the DIY community is deep. Light, low, cheap and forgiving, but low on power: a looks-and-learning platform, not a performance one. Budget to sort the cam-chain tensioner on any well-used example.

Engine: 652cc air-cooled SOHC single, 31 hp @ 5,400 rpm, belt final drive

Years: 1986–2020 (LS650 Savage 1986–2004; renamed Boulevard S40 from 2005; 5-speed from 1993)

Weight: ~381 lb / 173 kg dry

Final drive: Belt

Value: Abundant and cheap: a running example is roughly $1,500–$3,500 (hundreds listed nationally at any time). Asking-price based — directional, not an appraisal.
